Some two years on, he turns to Rachmaninov.\n\nAt the heart of the programme are the Piano Sonata No. 1, inspired by Goethe's Faust, and the six Moments musicaux, in which Rachmaninov's brilliant technique and expressive range are distilled to their essence. Around them Osborne places the composer's own transcription of a movement from the All-Night Vigil, together with two of the three works Rachmaninov wrote in 1917 before leaving Russia: the Oriental Sketch and Oskolki (easily misunderstood through the English rendering \"Fragments\" - the Russian word does not denote a fragmentary piece, but rather the shards of, say, a broken mirror). The result is an intriguing piece of programming.\n\nOsborne has a distinguished track record in this repertoire. His 2018 recording of the Etudes-tableaux (CDA68188) was praised by Gramophone - \"Rachmaninov fans won't want to miss this\" - and named an Editor's Choice, as well as being nominated in Limelight Magazine's Recordings of the Year 2018.
