Volume 11 features the music of Carlo Gesualdo—the “unorthodox genius” with whom they have frequently collaborated on “Madrigal Collection Vol. 6 (GCD922801),” “Responsories (GCD922803),” “Madrigal Collection Vol. 3 (GCD922806),” and “Madrigal Collection, Vol. 2 (GCD922809),” featuring the music of Carlo Gesualdo, a maverick genius with whom they have frequently collaborated. On the Glossa label, La Veneciana (a group operating under a different name, though with several overlapping core members) recorded Vol. 4 (GCD920934) and Volume 5 (GCD920935), thereby completing the project of all six volumes of his five-part madrigal collections after more than 20 years.\n\nCarlo Gesualdo (1566–1613) was a genius composer who led a tumultuous life: born into a line of clergymen and holding the noble titles of Duke of Venosa and Count of Conza, yet also marked by a bloody past—having murdered his wife and her lover—and a lonely end in his later years. In 1594, around the same time as Volume 2, (in 1594, when he was 28 years old, four years after the murder of his unfaithful wife), the first volume of his five-voice madrigal collection, published in Ferrara, is a compilation of works likely composed before 1591. It consists of clear and effective music, far removed from his later experimental style. This recording marks a new milestone thanks to the performers’ deep knowledge of the music and poetry of the period, their beautiful voices and precise intonation, and their exquisite expressiveness in conveying rich emotions (affetti).
