Having studied directly with Ravel, he was already a legendary figure in his own lifetime. His two complete recordings of Ravel's solo piano music, made in 1955 and 1973, are widely regarded as landmarks of the gramophone, and this Fauré collection is a document of comparable value — the testimony of a musician who was there.\n\nPerlemuter entered the Paris Conservatoire at the age of 13 and joined the class of Alfred Cortot. On 4 July 1919 he won the Conservatoire's Premier Prix playing Chopin's Polonaise-fantaisie and Fauré's Thème et variations; the president of the jury on that occasion was none other than the Conservatoire's director, Fauré himself. Fauré took a liking to the young pianist, and in 1922-23, after his graduation, Perlemuter was repeatedly invited to the home of Fauré's close friend Fernand Maillot at Annecy-le-Vieux, where he gave private first performances of the Nocturne No. 13 and the Piano Trio. He also played a great many works for the composer, among them the Violin Sonata No. 1, the Berceuse, the Élégie, numerous songs, and the Ballade and Fantaisie for piano and orchestra. The programme here ranges widely, from the Nocturne No. 1 of 1875 to Fauré's last piano work, the Nocturne No. 13 of 1921, and includes the Thème et variations that Perlemuter played at his Conservatoire examination. These are exceptionally valuable recordings of music heard through a direct personal connection with its composer.\n\nFor this reissue, a new remastering has been carried out by Mike Clements, engineer for the Nimbus label. Nimbus had never previously remastered this material, but generously agreed to our request in the interest of delivering the best possible sound.
