After leaving the orchestra in 1999, renowned German violinist Kolja Blacher transitioned to a career as a soloist and has continued to perform around the world.\nBlacher, along with the Catalan composer, pianist and conductor Oriol Cruichen, recorded Shostakovich’s “Symphony No. 15” and “Jazz Suite No. 2,” both arranged for a “piano trio plus percussion” chamber ensemble!\n\nViktor Derevyanko, a pianist from the former Soviet Union, studied piano under Genrikh Neuhaus, the founder of the “Neuhaus School”—the most prominent school of the Russian Piano School—and chamber music under Maria Yudina. He left his homeland in 1974 to seek asylum in Israel, where he served as a professor of piano at Tel Aviv University and nurtured outstanding pianists such as Inon Barnatan. There is a famous anecdote that his arrangement of Shostakovich’s “Symphony No. 15” for “piano trio plus percussion”—which he arranged himself—was highly praised by the composer himself and was even assigned the catalog number “Op. 141bis.”\nFor this recording of the chamber music version, Kruischen arranged “Jazz Suite No. 2” for the same ensemble using the same approach as Derevianko. The result is an excellent arrangement that allows listeners to enjoy the unique charm of this masterpiece, which combines elements of film, ballet, and theatrical music.\n\nThe lineup of performers is also exceptionally impressive.
