He studied at the Schola Cantorum in Basel in 1968 and made his debut in 1971 with the world’s first LP recording on the Baroque lute.\nIn 1973, he was appointed professor at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague (Netherlands), and until his retirement in January 2005, he devoted himself to nurturing the next generation of musicians. He continues to be active on a global scale, living up to his reputation as a leading figure in the lute world.\nThis new release features Toyohiko Sato’s latest recording, made in October and November 2007 at the Oshima Cultural Hall in Saikai City, Nagasaki: *The Lute’s Ornamental Cabinet*, a collection of works by Lussage de Riché, who was born in France and is believed to have been active in the late 17th century.\nWith the exception of the fact that he studied under Charles Mouton, almost everything about Lusage de Richet remains a mystery. His collection *The Lute’s Ornamental Cabinet* is strongly characterized by a “singing style”—or “cantabile style”—and its beautiful, simple melodies deeply resonate with the listener.\nThe instrument used—an original lute made by Laurentius Greif—was crafted in Ingolstadt in 1610.
