It is a farcical tale of the behind-the-scenes maneuvering among singers, composers, and performers leading up to the staging of an opera based on Greek mythology, culminating in a chaotic performance that blends tragedy and comedy after their negotiations break down. This Strauss opera, brimming with satire and irony, has long entertained audiences through a variety of productions. However, Katarina Thomas, who directed this production, set the story during World War II in an attempt to imbue this “little story” with deeper meaning. Even in the scene near the end of the prologue, where the composer hesitates as he attempts to bring his vision to life, Thomas uses images and sounds of intense bombing and approaching fighter planes to prevent him from having a moment of deep reflection. As a result, all the characters are burdened with pain and driven by delusions and remorse.
