After Rameau’s retirement, when the “Buffon Controversy”—a debate over the superiority of Italian versus French opera—flared up again, the defenders of French opera promoted this work as their trump card to prove the superiority of their camp. In the video recording of this production, performed without an audience at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in January 2021, the audience is captivated by the fantastical scenes created by the comical movements of the puppets (clay figures and flocks of sheep), the dazzling costumes, and the beautiful set design.
