The two fall in love and leave Paris to live a life together. However, Giorgio’s homeland was suffering under a tyrannical regime, and its people were in distress. Upon hearing this, Giorgio resolved to return to his homeland, and the two decided to part ways with heavy hearts. Late 19th-century Italian opera was at the height of Verismo (realism). There was a tendency to draw on familiar, tabloid-like incidents as subject matter. However, Giordano and Puccini composed beautiful works that adhered to tradition. This opera, *Marcella*, premiered in Milan on November 9, 1907. Although the runtime is short—about one hour—it enjoyed immense popularity at the time. However, the archives were destroyed during the bombings of World War II, and performances ceased. Fortunately, the autograph score survived, allowing for a triumphant revival in 2007 to mark the 100th anniversary of its premiere. Formaggia, who plays Giorgio, has a look that’s a bit at odds with the character’s portrayal as a young prince (he’s more of a plain-looking middle-aged man), but his sweet, resonant voice is truly remarkable. Daolio, who plays Marcella, also possesses an expressive, melodious voice that seems to flow like water. The passionate duet at the end of the act follows the standard pattern, but rather than one of them collapsing after the song ends, Giorgio gazes at Marcella as she curls up and lies down, as if rejecting everything, and then— Giorgio lightly touches her head—as if to say, “There’s no point in saying anything more”—then brushes the dust off his jacket and exits.
