A composer exclusively of operas, he is best known for his own compositions, as well as for his completed version of Puccini's \"Turandot\". This album contains three string quartets, recorded for the first time in the world. The first piece, written during World War I, is in the key of \"D major,\" but it has little sense of tonality, and from the beginning, the music is almost atonal, but it is propulsive. The second movement, with its beautiful cello solo, is followed by a dramatic climax in the last movement. No. 2 is described as a work \"in three connected movements. It begins with a heavy first movement, followed by a familiar melody in the second movement, which leads to a rough and tumble final movement. Composition of No. 3 began in 1944, the year after his wife's death, and was completed in 1945. The first movement's mournful melody expresses his feelings for his wife. A light second movement follows, and the final movement ends with a festive march reminiscent of ancient Rome.
