Today, it is a popular instrument used in a wide variety of settings, from classical to pop, rock, and jazz. Many composers have written concertos for this instrument, probably more than 2,000, but unfortunately only a handful of them have made it into the standard repertoire. This album unearths five concertos that have been buried in history and asks the listener to consider their significance. Craigan was an American composer, saxophone teacher, and methodologist. Unfortunately, only the piano accompaniment score of this concerto survives, and it seems that it was never performed with orchestra. Gounaropoulos was a Russian-born Finnish composer. The concerto was written for the Finnish saxophonist Lajula, and Tuomasalo was able to locate it for this recording.Lindorff-Larsen's piece is sometimes played in student examinations even today, but it is too short for an actual concert. Pulse's work is also too short to be suitable for concert performance, but it is a gem of beauty. The work by Tate, a British female composer, was commissioned by the BBC Broadcasting Corporation. She was highly self-critical and discarded most of her early works, but this concerto is one that barely survived.
