In recent years, the full scope of his work has come to light with the completion of a catalog of his works by musicologist Padolta. Although the majority of Kronmer’s compositions—who was a violinist—consist of chamber music, including string quartets, he is also believed to have composed more than ten symphonies (including those that have been lost or destroyed). The two symphonies included here follow the classic four-movement structure, featuring a lively fast movement, an elegant slow movement, and a minuet with a graceful trio. The “Concertino” is scored in the style of a concerto symphony, featuring three solo instruments, but in substance it is a five-movement divertimento with two minuets, and its playing time exceeds that of the two symphonies. The orchestra is largely confined to an accompanying role, and the way the three solo instruments add bright, brilliant color throughout the entire piece is truly a delight to the ear. One can imagine that the orchestra of that era must have had some outstanding soloists.
