Description:
NAXOS' series of complete Mozart masses with the Cologne Chamber Orchestra conducted by Christoph Poppen. This fifth collection, following the fourth, also features the chorus of the Cologne Cathedral Vocal Ensemble, founded in 1996. The album includes three pieces from the "Orphanage Mass," a large-scale work by Mozart at the age of 12. The "Orphanage Mass," K. 139, was written for the dedication of a church in a Viennese orphanage and, despite the advice of his father Leopold, was written with a large orchestra including trombones and trumpets, and was highly praised by the Wiener Zeitung when first performed. The Mass in C major, K. 259, was written in 1775-76. It is called the "Organ Solo Mass" because after a short Credo and Sanctus, the music turns to G major and the organ leads the soloist in a flourish. The Solemn Mass, K. 337, was written in 1780 and was the last work for the Archbishop of Salzburg. It is full of details, including elegant orchestration with bassoon. Naxos Japan
