The Unborn Grandchildren is a collection of songs written using poems by Austrian Expressionist writer Georg Trakl. This work by conductor and composer Fabrice Boron was originally written for tenor, soprano, and chamber orchestra in 2014 and revised for electric cello and song in 2021. The strange title comes from the last line of Trakl's poem, which encapsulates Trakl's heartrending cry that "he will never have any more grandchildren or descendants" after seeing the corpses of his soldiers in World War I. The impressive singing of the soprano and tenor, who sing over the pizzicato and other varied timbres of the electric cello, sometimes almost grotesque, will be noted as opening up an unexpected new direction in contemporary music. Also, "The Secret Garden of Cordania," a work dedicated by Boron to his cellist wife, is an exciting work for electric cello that makes full use of multiple recordings. Naxos Japan
