Description:

Greece declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1821. Since that time, there were people who went to Vienna and Berlin to study music, and at the beginning of the 20th century, their pupils and newcomers to Germany and Austria were actively writing works, and the Greek government was also making efforts to adopt tradition in its educational activities. The pieces on this CD are the result of such efforts. Some of the pieces are selected from scores owned by the Thessaloniki National Symphony Orchestra, and some have never been published. The recording was made at a time when concerts were being canceled in Corona, so it had a special emotional impact on me. In Greece, located on the border between Europe and Asia, both European and Asian influences are strongly felt. Many of the songs on this album have polyrhythmic elements unique to Greek folk music, and I think they bring out the unique colors of Greece. I hope you all enjoy it. -Noe Dry A collection of orchestral works by 20th century Greek composers. The album opens with "Dawn of the Parthenon" by Michaelides, which shows the influence of French Impressionism, and continues with "Pictures of an Island" by Kalomiris, which has a sensual sound reminiscent of Rimsky=Korsakov. From the elongated first movement, which evokes the dawn of the Mediterranean, to the third movement, which depicts a folk dance with a festive atmosphere, the outstanding violinist is Noe Inui, whose mother is Greek. Constantinidis' two suites feature unique scales and rhythms. Skalkottas' "Five Greek Dances" is a string quartet of five pieces selected by the composer from "36 Greek Dances" for various instrumentation, and German-born conductor and composer Walter Goerl added a double bass part to the string ensemble. The music is a fun and lively Greek version of Bartók's "Romanian Folk Dances," with a playful touch, using material created by Skalkottas to resemble folk songs in addition to real folk songs.
