The composers featured on this album were born during the monarchy and studied in Europe on government scholarships. As the title “Ancient Suite” suggests, many of the works on this album feature Baroque-style compositions; listeners who enjoy Respighi’s “Ancient Dances for Lute” or Grieg’s “From Holberg’s Time” are sure to find great pleasure in this collection.\nGomes, born in São Paulo, studied in Milan and achieved success with the opera *The Guarani Man*, which premiered at La Scala in Milan in 1870. The “Sonata for Strings” also charms with its bright, Italian-style melody, reminiscent of Rossini’s string sonatas. Praga was born in Rio de Janeiro. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied composition under Massenet. This “Madrigal-Pavane” is a refreshing piece set to a light, lively rhythm. Nepomuceno studied at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome and later in Germany under Heinrich von Herzogenberg and Max Bruch. This “Archaic Suite” was originally written as a four-movement piano suite and premiered at the home of Grieg, with whom he was close friends. The three-movement orchestral version included here was composed later and premiered by the Berlin Philharmonic. The “Serenata,” which begins with an elegant first theme, is also romantic. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Miges moved to Spain with his family at a young age. He later studied violin and composition in Portugal and returned to Brazil at the age of 20, but 12 years later he went to study in France, where he was strongly influenced by Ambroise Thomas, director of the Paris Conservatory, and César Franck.
