This album features five representative works from that era.\nThe opening “Ballade” was written by Prokofiev when he was just beginning his career as a composer, and it conveys the young composer’s enthusiasm. Set to a piano accompaniment with a natural flow reminiscent of improvisation, the cello sings a passionate melody as the piece gradually builds to a climax; suddenly, a whimsical melody appears, leading to an intense dialogue between the cello and the piano, before the piece gently comes to a close.\nShostakovich’s Cello Sonata was written at the suggestion of Viktor Lvovich Kubatsky, the principal cellist of the Bolshoi Theater, and was premiered on December 25, 1934, with Kubatsky on cello and the composer himself at the piano. Written primarily in a classical movement structure, it is one of Shostakovich’s early masterpieces that fully brings out the expressive power of the cello.\nEvgeny Kissin, one of the greatest pianists of our time, began composing in earnest about ten years ago. He completed this Cello Sonata in 2016, and it was premiered by Gautier Capuçon and Yuja Wang. In November 2021, Haruma Sato and Tomoki Sakata performed the Japanese premiere. This single-movement work, lasting about 10 minutes, features a memorable cello melody imbued with a sense of melancholy.\nProkofiev’s Cello Sonata was composed between 1947 and 1949. Perhaps mindful of the Zhdanov Criticism, which had been made public while he was composing, the work maintains a simple style throughout, making full use of catchy melodies; it remains one of the most frequently performed pieces even today. The premiere took place in 1949, featuring Rostropovich on cello and Sviatoslav Richter on piano.
