Blessed with such musical talent that he gave his first concert at the age of nine, he eventually established a reputation as a virtuoso pianist on par with Liszt. As a composer, he was also acclaimed for his grand symphonies and operas. However, perhaps because he favored a style with German influences, his works were rarely performed in post-World War II Russia, and with the exception of a very small number of piano pieces, most of his works were forgotten. “The Ball,” included in this album, is one such forgotten work. While it is rarely performed in modern concert halls, it is a collection of pieces well worth listening to. The piece begins with the dancers’ entrance, followed by a succession of brilliant melodies. Lighthearted dances unfold, and the atmosphere reaches its climax with a galop.
