As with the previous releases of Symphonies Nos. 3 and 4, this recording features the Freiburg Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Fabrice Boron. It is said that he intended to complete nine symphonies in his lifetime, but unfortunately, his plans were cut short when he died at the age of 49, caught up in the ravages of war. Both Symphony No. 1 and No. 2, included on this album, were composed under the guidance of Vincent d’Indy, who had a profound influence on Magnard. In particular, Symphony No. 1—which makes effective use of cyclic form—is dedicated to D’Indy and is a work imbued with gratitude toward his teacher; the pastoral atmosphere of the second movement, reminiscent of Dvořák, and the powerful melodies of the final movement leave a strong impression. No. 2, completed in 1893, was also composed under D’Indy’s guidance, but compared to No. 1, Magnard’s compositional style had advanced by leaps and bounds, and it seems he required almost no assistance from D’Indy.
