As the citizens of Bonn mourned, Beethoven composed a memorial cantata for the emperor and also conceived the idea of composing a cantata for the coronation of Leopold II, who succeeded Joseph II on the throne, and wrote a brilliant work. However, he never had the opportunity to perform it, and neither was performed during Beethoven's lifetime, perhaps because they were works with a fixed purpose. Nevertheless, he was confident of the quality of the two pieces, and it is said that he later used part of the \"Funeral Cantata\" as the finale of his opera \"Fidelio\" and showed the \"Coronation Cantata\" to Haydn in 1790 or 1792, when he stopped by Bonn. Segerstam gives a magnificent performance of these cantatas, both of which boast such a high degree of perfection that it is hard to believe that they were written by a young man around 20 years old.
