Although he left behind many unique works, he was ignored until finally, in his later years, some of his works began to be performed. His Symphony No. 1 \"Gothic\" is one of the longest and largest symphonies ever written, and it is this work's uniqueness that has made him a household name. There are 32 symphonies in total, but the two included in this album are works of common sense length, especially No. 16, a compact piece in only a single movement about a battle between ancient Greece and Persia. No. 7, written in classical form and inspired by Goethe's autobiography, opens with a magnificent fanfare and closes with a leisurely final movement. The Tinker's Wedding, based on a play by J.M. Sing, is a delightful piece reminiscent of 19th century Italian comic overtures.
