He wrote a large amount of piano music during his lifetime, but most of the works on this album are given \"WoO numbers\" (works without work numbers) and were either unpublished or unfinished. The music for the \"Ballet of the Knights,\" which opens the album, was composed for Count Waldstein, his patron, around 1791. The synopsis of the ballet itself has been lost, but the music has survived in both orchestral and piano arranged versions, making it possible to infer the content. The orchestral version of the two-part \"Wellington's Victory\" is well known, but it was originally written for \"panharmoniconikon,\" an automatic instrument used by military bands to produce a variety of tones. Beethoven's own piano version is performed here. You can hear the unique device of hearing the sound of a cannon in the middle of the piece. Other small pieces such as variations and marches are also included.
