Perhaps because this region was once part of the Ottoman Empire, the music born here has a unique atmosphere with \"complex rhythms and stimulating melodies. Guitarist Mac Gruzic selected works by five Balkan composers who share these characteristics and presented their unique compositions. Hristovski's works, which carry on Macedonian folklore, Papandopoulo's works with a hint of Croatian folk music, and Bogdanovic's \"Levant Suite\" with its meditative phrases all evoke an oriental image in the listener. Other pieces also incorporate jazz and modern styles, but certainly convey the atmosphere of traditional music.
