Born in Vologda in northern Russia, he grew up in difficult circumstances, losing his father in World War II when he was a child and his mother to imprisonment, but his musical talent was recognized and he entered the Leningrad Conservatory, where he studied clarinet, piano, and composition. In 1967, he was awarded the State Prize of the USSR. All of his works have beautiful melodies, sometimes with a pop-like familiarity. A Russian Notebook\" is a \"song of love and death\" written in response to the news of the death of a boy he knew. The text is cleverly used, and traditional melodies are effectively interwoven. Resetdinov, who created the orchestral version, studied Gavryllin's orchestration, giving the work a colorful sound that the composer could not achieve. The ballet music \"Anuta\" was written for a television broadcast film. There are more than 20 complete pieces, of which 10 are selected and performed by Yuri Sailov.
