Hummel's arrangements of some of these pieces are well known, but Lachner's arrangement, recorded here for the first time in the world, adds a double bass to the string quartet, giving the piece a richer sound. Lachner's arrangements of Nos. 20 and 21 have already been recorded by Goldstein and the Fine Arts Quartet (with a different double bass player) (8.573398), but Nos. 23 and 24 are also performed with a simple and intimate accompaniment that skillfully transfers the sound of the orchestra.
