In the 21st century, however, his works are finally being performed, and we are now able to witness a talent that cannot be dismissed as mere \"Beethoven's disciple. Two of the cello sonatas on this album, written in 1808, are dedicated to his teacher, the cellist Bernhard Romberg. However, Beethoven's influence is also strong, especially in Op.21 in A major, which is a \"master-conscious work\" in the manner of Ries, who is said to have been familiar with Beethoven's No.3, also written in A major. However, in his later life, Ries is said to have moved away from Beethoven's influence, and in the Cello Sonata of 1823, he shows a grandiose and elaborate style that anticipates the Romanticism of the style. The violently shifting expressions in the third movement are especially noteworthy. This is a performance by the Viennese virtuoso Rummel.
