When he first conceived the work in 1888 as a “Funeral,” it was intended to be a single-movement symphonic poem, but after various twists and turns, it ultimately evolved into a massive five-movement symphony featuring soprano and alto soloists, a chorus, and organ. This “Resurrection” Symphony is imbued with his many personal sentiments. His pupil, Bruno Walter, arranged this magnificent work for four-hand piano. While Mahler’s complex score remains intact, this “miniature”—in which all solo and choral parts are condensed into the sound of the piano—possesses a surprisingly refined quality. In this recording, the performers have deliberately chosen to play the duet score on two separate pianos to achieve an even greater sense of sonic breadth. The first movement, where surging emotions explode; the gentle and delicate second movement; the humorous third movement; the fourth movement, “Original Light,” which sings of simple faith; and the breathtaking final movement.
