The tragic Bizet (1838–1875) passed away just three months after the premiere, still reeling from that disappointment… Had he lived longer, the history of French opera would undoubtedly have taken a very different course. This album is a collection of Bizet’s lesser-known works. The Overture in A Major is his first orchestral work, written before he won the Prix de Rome. However, it was neither published nor performed during his lifetime, and thus remained largely forgotten. The Funeral March was composed as the overture for an opera based on *The King of Thule’s Cup*, but only fragments of it survive. The Little Suite consists of five pieces selected by Bizet himself from the 12-piece set “Children’s Games” for piano duet, which he then orchestrated. Track 4, “Tag,” though not included in the Little Suite, is also taken from the same collection. The overture “La Patrie” takes as its theme the surge of patriotism during the Franco-Prussian War. The contrast between its heroic and poignant sections is magnificent. “Rome,” the highlight of this album, is a work he began composing during a trip to Italy. Initially completed as “Souvenirs de Rome,” a set of three pieces, in 1871, a movement originally conceived as a scherzo for another piece was added, expanding it to four movements. However, it was never performed during Bizet’s lifetime and was finally premiered in its entirety in 1880.
