Yet how sad it is that today he is recognized solely as “the man who wrote etudes.” For this album, two of Japan’s finest musicians, Mr. Seo and Mr. Ueno, have joined forces to “restore Czerny’s reputation.” While they had already demonstrated their seamless ensemble playing on the Moscheles collection (8.573175), this Czerny recording features exquisite performances marked by even greater intimacy and tension. In the “Concerto-style Rondo,” published in 1836—a work that “exhausts every last note of Bellini and Rossini’s melodies to create a brilliant composition”—the solo flute’s breathtaking passages and the stability of the piano supporting them are simply astonishing. “Introduction, Variations, and Finale” was composed around 1825 and is based on the melody from Schubert’s “The Fading Flower.” It follows the style popular at the time, consisting of a leisurely introduction, brilliant variations, and a dazzling finale, The seven variations are also executed with exquisite technical artistry. This piece was written for Ferdinand Bogner, a flutist active at the time.
