It is a masterpiece known for its mysterious atmosphere that attracted many composers to write their own music. Among the best known are Debussy's opera and Schoenberg's symphonic poem. Not to be forgotten are the incidental music of Fauré and Sibelius (1865-1957). Compared to Fauré's relatively gentle works, Sibelius's music is full of ups and downs and contrasts. Sibelius wrote this incidental music in 1905, when the play was to be performed in Helsinki and Sibelius was commissioned to write the music. At the time, Sibelius was composing his 3rd Symphony, but he interrupted this and wrote most of the music in a little over a month. The entire work is filled with a Scandinavian atmosphere, which is very typical of Sibelius, and \"Melisande's Song\" (No. 6) is a masterpiece that is often performed on its own in various arrangements. Other pieces on this disc include \"Music for a Scene,\" which was later arranged for piano (Op. 45-2), \"Rural Landscape,\" also arranged for piano, and two waltzes arranged for orchestra from piano.
