This violin sonata is one such work. What a loss that such a wonderful work has never been recorded. As you know, Ries studied under Beethoven for a time, was a close friend and biographer of Beethoven throughout his life, but he left behind a vast body of work, and his style, while similar to Beethoven's, is in fact quite different. He painted 18 violin sonatas, most of which were written between 1807 and 1809, during the two years he spent in Paris. The French public at the time was obsessed with opera and showed no interest in these works. So he took the sonata with him on his European tour. The sonata is written in an elegant Viennese style reminiscent of Mozart, but it is an interesting sonata with many interesting twists and turns.
