He was a great composer who contributed to the development of North German organ music and inspired many successors; he is also known for having served for many years as organist at St. Catherine’s Church in Hamburg. The organ there is one of the most beautiful instruments in Northern Germany. In 1630, it was expanded by organ builder Gottfried Fritsche, transforming it into a large-scale instrument with 56 stops and four manuals. Consequently, Scheidemann began composing more intricate and large-scale works to explore the instrument’s characteristics.
