Influenced by his father, Strauss was taught to model his music after Mozart and Beethoven, and this string quartet is a well-structured work reflecting that guidance; however, he would gradually break free from his father’s constraints and go on to establish his own musical language.\nPuccini’s “Chrysanthemum” is a short yet sentimental and beautiful elegy. The “Three Minuets” is a short piece that evokes the spirit of Haydn. Verdi’s string quartet, composed when he was 60, is his only chamber music work. Although these works are rarely performed, they can be considered masterpieces that offer a glimpse into completely different facets of these three composers.\nThe Ensō Quartet, which performs these works, was founded at Yale University in 1999 and has been based in New York since 2007. They possess a wide-ranging repertoire spanning from the Renaissance to the present day, and their renowned performances of Ginastera’s string quartets are second to none.
