Paganini had expected a flamboyant piece that would showcase the viola’s virtuosic capabilities, but Berlioz ultimately did not follow Paganini’s vision; instead, he slightly modified the original plan and completed the work as a symphonic poem featuring the viola. This performance is also particularly interesting, as it features the original orchestral part transcribed for piano accompaniment by Franz Liszt. The other piece, the “Irish Sonata,” was composed by Kurt Roger. Although he studied under Schoenberg, his compositional style is lyrical.
