While the first collection contained songs for soprano voices, this second collection features songs for male voices sung by tenors, which is a complete change of pace. Pfitzner composed lovely songs that reflect the mood of the moment for almost the entirety of his life. His earliest surviving songs are considered to be the \"Six Romances of a Young Man\" from 1884 to 1887, but the \"Seven Romances\" Op.2 on this album were written shortly after that. Although Mahler's influence is apparent, the simple brush strokes and folk song-like tunes form a world of his own, supported by rich depictions of natural scenery. The content, which deepens with age from a praise of nature to a hymn to love, is also noteworthy.
