Why?\" Before you can even think, \"Why?\" the composer's \"Magnificat\" begins. What a fresh surprise! Swain (1946-), born in England in 1946, studied in London and then in Paris with Messiaen. He wrote many choral works, and here we hear four pieces from his 30-year composing career. The Magnificat is based on a Jora folk song he heard when he visited Senegal in 1982, \"Oh, Larum. It is an interesting work that captures the power that seems to well up in him. Later, back in England, he wrote \"The Land of Silence,\" which consists of 40 parts chorus and solo cello. It is a heart-wrenching, too-sorrowful minuet.Dedicated to a grieving mother who has lost her child in Israel and Palestine, \"Stabat Mater\" weaves together Latin texts with Aramaic, Hebrew, Arabic, and other languages. In the final motet, all the words melt together to express a prayer for peace. This is not easy music to listen to, but it is one that should be listened to carefully.
