He studied music in Vienna and Leipzig, where he also studied under Max Reger; it is fair to say that he developed his rich, substantial style during this time. Beginning in 1921, he taught at the New Vienna Conservatory, and from 1935 onward, he also taught at the Budapest Conservatory. However, when World War II broke out, he moved to the United States, where he made significant contributions to the field of film music.\nHis style has been described as falling “between *La Traviata* and *Lulu*,” and he produced numerous unique works that fuse traditional timbres with 20th-century idioms. The collection is packed with a rich variety of sounds, ranging from the pastoral “Elegies and Dances” to the lively and expressive “Oboe Concerto” and “Divertimento,” as well as “Etudes” that seem to push the limits of what an orchestra can achieve.
