It is said that, perhaps in accordance with the Jewish custom of “matrilineal descent,” he began using the compound surname “Meyer-Behr”—a combination of both family names—when he inherited his grandfather’s estate. His brothers included the astronomer Wilhelm and the playwright Michael; tracks 22 and 25 on this album are songs set to Michael’s poems.
