This two-album set features his complete works, composed over a span of 50 years; this is the first volume. After studying organ, piano, and cello in Turin, he studied under Enrico Bossi in 1911. While working as a composer and conductor, he also mentored many students at the conservatory. The pieces included here are early works from around 1908 to 1916, characterized by a fresh and spontaneous style. Each piece is ingeniously crafted; for example, the theme and variations based on the word “Faith” incorporate the notes F (F), E (E), D (D), and E (E)—the Italian word for faith, “Fede.” Although this is a technique often used by Liszt and Schumann, he took it a step further to create a magnificent set of variations with a more contemporary sound.
