Weinberg's 24 preludes for solo cello were written with the same purpose as Bach's mean rules and the \"24 preludes\" of Chopin and Shostakovich. It is, of course, not only an exploration of tonal relationships, but also a deep study of the characteristics of the instruments and the culmination of musical style and technique, no doubt. Dedicated to the virtuoso Rostropovich, the Sonata for Solo Cello, written in 1960, is a masterpiece of perfection in three movements. The first movement is relaxing and contemplative, the second is humorous, and the third is explosive. This sonata was highly acclaimed among Russian music lovers. These are truly 20th century masterpieces that bring out the infinite possibilities of a single cello, and are performed with great conviction by the virtuoso cellist Fagelson, who has a career spanning over 30 years.
