The four works included here were composed between 1794 and 1795, during the peak of Haydn’s creative career, which coincided with his second visit to London. Though small in scale, these works display masterful craftsmanship; they were written for and dedicated to Rebecca Schläter, a widow living in London. There is no doubt that her presence spurred Haydn’s creative drive—even as he was over 60—and bore great fruit in his compositions. Haydn reportedly even considered marriage if circumstances had permitted, but unfortunately, since he already had a “legal wife,” this remained an unfulfilled dream.
