This piano concerto is known for having been included in the program of the final concert Mahler conducted at Carnegie Hall during his lifetime. Given that his health was likely already deteriorating at the time, conducting this monumental work must have been quite a challenge for him, don’t you think? Although the first movement is quite long at 20 minutes, it’s a joy simply to follow the majestic and beautiful melodies as they appear and fade one after another. The program is also packed with highlights, including the dreamlike beauty of the second movement, the Largo, and the third movement, which features a dazzling and breathless duel between the orchestra and the piano. Please enjoy the final splendor of the late Romantic period to the fullest. The short pieces included as bonus tracks are also deeply rewarding, leaving you feeling as though you’ve gotten a special treat.
