He currently holds the important position of president of the Polish Music Society and is actively promoting contemporary music by commissioning new works both domestically and internationally. These string quartets were composed during a period when his style was shifting from the avant-garde to a neoclassical style; his String Quartet No. 8 from 1985, for example, is a nostalgic work that even suggests tonality. According to the composer himself, these works were born from a combination of fond memories of chamber music concerts held in his home during his childhood and new inspirations from composers such as Bartók. Enjoy this recording featuring the spicy performance of the Wieniawski String Quartet, making their NAXOS debut.
