There is no doubt that this new collection of symphonies will receive even greater praise. Roussel is known for his rather rich and substantial sound—uncommon for a French composer. While his incidental music is relatively well-known, his symphonies are a genre that has garnered very little popularity. Although conductors such as Dutoit and Münch have recorded them in the past, I believe that if more wonderful performances like this one were to emerge, the audience for his symphonies would surely grow. Symphony No. 1 was composed between 1904 and 1906 and premiered in 1908. Despite its subtitle, “Poem of the Forest,” it is not program music. While the mood is certainly based on the four seasons, it is left to the listener’s imagination to visualize the landscapes depicted. The symphonic prelude “Resurrection” is inspired by Tolstoy’s novel of the same name. This solitary masterpiece is truly brought to life through the expressive melodies of the woodwinds. “The Sleep Fairy,” a work that showcases Roussel’s expertise in ballet music, is an expressive composition for the play by G. Jean-Aubry.
