His “Symphony No. 1,” composed in 1947, attracted significant attention from Shostakovich, but due to the persecution of non-mainstream composers during the Stalin era, it was not premiered until 15 years later, in 1962. This CD features a recording based on the score used at the premiere. “The Murmuring Forest” is a dramatization of Vladimir Korolenko’s novel, which depicts people living in the forest under a cruel and merciless lord. Although the work makes full use of a rich orchestral palette, the score was believed to have been lost until it was rediscovered thanks to the efforts of the Boris Tchaikovsky Society. \"After the Dance Party\" is similarly based on a literary work by Tolstoy and was composed as a seven-part dance suite.
