He studied in Prague and Paris, and in 1888 became director of the newly established Cracow Music Academy. As a composer, he left behind numerous works ranging from symphonies and operas to orchestral and vocal music, and along with Monieuszko, he was one of the leading composers of the Polish Romantic period. The opera \"Janek\" tells the story of Janek (or Johnny in English), the leader of a band of robbers. Set in the Tatra Mountains, it depicts the tumultuous love affair between his fiancée, Marinka, the robber Stak, and Stak's fiancée, Bronka. Zielenski has made the whole work engaging by incorporating Polish folk music and music from the Tatra region. The title role of Janek is sung by Ukasz Gai, a graduate of the Karol Szymanowski Music Academy and a tenor active mainly in Poland with over 40 operas and operettas in his repertoire.
