He was also close friends with Clara Schumann and Brahms, and worked as a teacher at the music school founded by Raff in Frankfurt, leaving a significant legacy as an educator. As a composer, he published numerous works ranging from solo piano pieces to large-scale orchestral works, as well as two operas—including this one—chamber music, and choral works; in the year of his death, he was also involved in the restoration of Gregorian chant. Although he was internationally recognized during his lifetime as a champion of the late Romantic movement, he was quickly forgotten after his death. This work is a love story reminiscent of Schumann and Weber, and it ends with a happy ending.
