His Flute Concerto was inspired by the playing of virtuoso flutist Marina Piccinini. Piccinini is a Canadian flutist who, according to an anecdote, turned down an offer from the Boston Symphony Orchestra to become a soloist. His tone has been praised as \"singing like a singer. The piece is composed of movements in various dance styles, and each movement is written in a pattern that begins gently and ends dramatically. The frenetic atmosphere of the final movement, \"Taran-Tura,\" is particularly memorable. Other pieces on this disc include \"Air,\" which Curtis himself calls \"a love letter to the flute,\" and \"Symphony No. 2,\" which was written during the Gulf War. The diversity of Curtis's style can be felt on this disc.
