He first studied with Schoenberg and wrote rhythm-oriented works while researching the possibilities of electric instruments and noise, but in 1940 he invented the prepaid piano (a grand piano with foreign objects inserted into its strings to change its tone), which led him on a lifelong quest for a variety of sounds. This album contains music for a prepaid piano and a toy piano. The toy piano's sound is a mixture of frenetic rhythmic exchanges, exotic tones, nostalgia, and mysterious echoes. Track 8 is also music based on chance, and what sounds emerge will depend on the moment.
