Active during an intriguing “intermediate period” sandwiched between the era of Haydn and Mozart and the era that produced masterpieces for violin by German Romantic composers, Hummel’s only violin concerto features a solo part that makes masterful use of virtuosic technique in the outer movements, as well as a beautiful, graceful Adagio brimming with a lyricism usually heard only in opera. On this CD, you can hear the reconstructed complete version by Gregory Rose. The Concerto for Piano and Violin, Op. 17, leaves a lasting impression with its playful interplay between the two solo instruments.
