This philosophical work is rarely performed, and this recording features the second draft (1737)—sung in Italian—which was buried after its premiere, sandwiched between the 1707 first draft and the 1757 third draft (with English lyrics), to the point that not even a complete score existed. Once you’re moved by the overture and the magnificent opening chorus, you’re sure to want to listen to all three discs from start to finish. In addition to the superb choral performances, there are plenty of highlights, such as the technical virtuosity of the aria on Disc 1, Track 8, and the dreamlike atmosphere created by the carillon on Disc 2, Track 8.
